  • The Faculty of Science Student Census was under development during the pandemic (2020-2021) and was officially launched during the winter of 2021. The idea behind the student census is to collect long-term data on student feedback, concerns, and thoughts on student-wide resources and services offered by the Faculty of Science. The goal of the student census is to continue collecting and comparing data with future students to ensure improvements are being made for student success in their educational careers.

  • 1). Presented to the Associate Dean of Science (Academic) and department representatives on the Academic Procedures and Planning Committee (AP&PC) to brainstorm initiatives within the Faculty of Science

2). Guided the planning of MSS academic advocacy initiatives, such as the creation of a second-year specialization hub

  • The Thesis Experience Survey was created to allow students to voice their thoughts and provide feedback on the process leading up to and including their thesis project. Many students in the Faculty of Science pursue a thesis project in their final year of study and the overall process from start until the end can be overwhelming for many students. The survey was designed to help the MSS get a better understanding of the level of understanding, awareness, and preparation students are provided to assist them in their thesis and to ensure their experience is a positive one.

  • 1). Guided the planning and execution of the Thesis Information Night, an event done in collaboration with Melissa Speagle (2020-2021 Third Year Rep)

2). Discussed with Dr. Mic Farquharson, the Associate Dean of Science (Academic), about the potential of having a centralized hub for thesis to address the challenges students were facing in the process of securing a supervisor

3). Results were brought to the attention of the Science Careers and Cooperative Education (SCCE) Office to guide their planning of SCIENCE 3EP3, SCIENCE 3RP3

  • The Level I Science Gateway Program Survey was designed to allow the MSS to gain a more thorough understanding of student concerns, thoughts, and feedback pertaining to the design of the gateway programs offered by the Faculty of Science. This idea for the survey was first introduced after a majority of students were entering into specializations that were outside of their gateway pathway. The survey allowed students and faculty members on the MSS to better understand the level of preparation students are receiving after the completion of level I in a gateway program for upper-year programs.

  • 1). Increased promotion of MapSci to first-year students beginning from their enrollment into the program up until the application for upper-year specializations.

2). Informed initiatives/projects looking to optimize and potentially alter the Gateway structure.

  • The idea behind this survey was to design an anonymous survey to gauge the level of understanding students have of science accomplishments by those who are underrepresented, as well as their comfort levels in courses to gauge where improvement for course representation of underrepresented groups can be implemented.

  • 1) Work with the Dean's office to implement some short-term strategies as suggested by students in the survey.

    2) Work with the Associate Dean (EDII) to implement survey accommodations for long-term inclusion of equitable and inclusive practices.

  • The Student Awareness of Academic Policies survey was designed to gauge the level of student awareness and understanding surrounding academic policies implemented by the Faculty of Science. The goal was to learn more about the resources that were somewhat and/or minimally visible to students, to increase awareness and student exposure to such policies. As a student, a general understanding of academic policies is crucial to your success and the goal was to increase exposure to students within the faculty depending on student responses.

  • 1). Developed an Academic Policies infographic that was distributed at the Academic Planning and Procedures Council (AP&PC) and on MSS Social Medias. The goal of this was to synthesize and present relevant information in a more accessible manner

2). Discussed with Dr. Mic Farquharson, the Associate Dean of Science (Academic), to incorporate more content on academic policies into the SCIENCE 1A03 curriculum

  • The MSS Tutoring Service Survey was designed to assess the outreach, effectiveness, affordability, and accessibility of the MSS tutoring service. As a recently established service offered by the MSS, it was important to receive feedback from the student body to gain a better understanding of specific areas to improve on and continue with to ensure students are surpassing their academic goals.

  • 1). Implemented annual feedback forms for Tutor Feedback (released at the end of the academic year)

  • The Academic Climate survey released by the MSS was designed to gauge an overall understanding of how students in the Faculty of Science felt about their academics and their academic abilities. The Faculty of Science aims to ensure that all students are feeling welcomed, comfortable, and confident when attending classes, office hours, tutorials etc… The goal of this survey was to allow the MSS and all faculty members to learn about the academic climate in courses and within the Faculty of Science overall to provide additional resources and opportunities for all students to feel confident in their academic potential.

  • 1). A survey on student awareness and understanding of Academic Policy was released in Fall 2020 to gain further insight on the investigative results here.

  • The Undergraduate Research Experience Survey is designed to understand student awareness, interest, and preparation provided for students looking to pursue research during their undergraduate career. The survey assessed the levels of research experience students have participated in across all disciplines while analyzing some of the challenges students were presented with, and resources students felt were helpful in securing a research position. The feedback will be presented to the Office of the Associate Dean-Academic to design and implement strategies to help make research experience more accessible to Science undergraduates.

  • 1). Presented to the Associate Dean of Science (Academic) to brainstorm initiatives within the Faculty of Science to address students’ research experiences.

2). Implement feedback from the survey in the development of resources to be created and provided by the Undergraduate Office of Research (currently in the development stages).
